What are your experiences about internet directories?

Have they been successful in bringing traffic to your site?
Have they affected your Google page rank?

Why don't you post articles to wikis and other similar free & business oriented sites instead of submitting your url to different directories. I bet wikis will prove much more effective than 100 link directory submissions. Also the quality of the backlinks will be much higher with wikis.
