This should take care of the problem.

My other forum has a lot of members and a few moderators that are at the site all the time and they usually clear the spam posts out before anyone sees them, is there anyone on this board that is a long time trustworthy member who would like to be upgraded to a moderator?
If we do this I can stop the flood of bogus user accounts that just plug up our system. If I allow guests to post freely again like before there will be more valuable content as not everyone wants to register.
Thanks,
Dana

OK, that helped a little but now the spammers are just signing up and creating bogus user accounts. I have looked into this and IPB is working on a solution but has not found one yet... they are getting closer but since this is being done by real humans in third world countries for pennies they can get past anything you guys can.

you should set up that the account needs verification via email or add the scrambled letters on account creation

Not sure if you realize this but its not a spam bot doing this, it's real people in Russa working for peanuts who can figure out the scrambled letters. Sad to see no one wants to be a moderator on this board.

There'll be other domains and nonresolving IPs doing it too. You could do what we do when we get a fraudulent order from overseas:
Go to dnsstuff.com or other site that offers IPWHOIS and check the IP of the offending user to get their net block, then block that range of IP addresses from accessing the server.
For instance, the MOMFAQ web server IP is 64.34.203.94.
The IPWHOIS shows two ranges it's a part of, the smaller of which is 64.34.192.0 - 64.34.207.255.
Click on the link associated with that range (NET-64-34-192-0-1) and get more details, including the CIDR notation for the range: 64.34.192.0/20
Use that notation to block the range in the (Apache) config file: deny from 64.34.192.0/20
(You'll have to look up how to block access by IP ranges yourself if you use a server other than Apache.)

Is there anyone in Russia using MOM? If they don't sell it there anyway, just block .ru domains from accessing the site altogether. You can probably block .ng while you're at it.

We have noticed some fraudsters from ru use "US" dialup accounts so they get and "Us" ip address
